I’ve always had soft-spot for very weird out of the box blackmetal,
things that have the essence of blackmetal but where the music doesn’t
always display that. I remember Arcturus’ La Masquerade Infernale
which coming from an established blackmetal band all of a sudden
opened the door to fairly avant-guard interpretations. So this year
when I stumbled upon Pensées Nocturnes it immediately hit many of
those sweet spots. Strange avant-guard compositions, weird
old-timey instruments, compositions blending jazz, tango, and
classical pieces but then just slathering it over with thick grotesque
blackmetal vocals. It was just too much to pass up; and it’s a astounding
album, from start to finish it blends the aforementioned styles and
just swirls it in disgusting raw blackmetal providing a perverted
disgusting end product. This is certainly not for the faint of heart
or for purists of any genre, but if you’re adventurous this is
certainly a ride worth taking.
